Expensive Custom Cabinets: What’s The Catch?

Expensive Custom Cabinets: What’s The Catch?

I. Introduction

Why are custom cabinets so expensive?

Could it be that they offer unparalleled quality and design not found in other cabinet types? Are they the ultimate, most desired cabinet on the market, allowing people to charge them at high prices? Is the installation and service included in the price? (psst… it is)

These are all reasonable questions that can come up when wondering about this price difference. It doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Well, I’m here to shed some light on this issue. In the past decade, I’ve lived and breathed cabinets and cabinet life. I’ve explored the industry as a customer, a DIY maker, and a professional cabinet technician, and now I write about cabinets every day.

Through all of this, I’ve gained some insights as to why cabinets are priced as they are. My time in cabinet manufacturing in particular, has helped me to understand what exactly goes into making a custom cabinet, and why they are so expensive.

Today, I share this knowledge with you.

II. What Are Custom Cabinets?

In a nutshell, a custom cabinet is any cabinet that is made to order according to your specifications. People in different parts of the world have different names for these amazing cabinets.

Custom Cabinets: International Terminology and Misleading Misnomers

Elegant Modern Grey Kitchen Tour Luxe Design and Smart Storage Solutions

Europeans call them “bespoke cabinets”, because they are tailored to your needs and preferences. Australians refer to them as “custom-made cabinets”, because they are built from scratch to fit your space and style. Here in America, and to our friendly neighbors up north, they’re called “custom cabinets” or just “customs”.

Every now and then I hear someone call a custom cabinet a “frameless cabinet”, which is in reference to a specific variety of custom cabinet. While this term works and people can generally figure out what type of cabinet is in question, I think it’s misleading and not accurate.

Custom Cabinets: Versatility and Underappreciation in Cabinetry Choices

frameless Custom cabinets do not have to be frameless, although they can be. They can also have face frames, inset doors, or any other design features that you want. These are the main differences between custom cabinets and other types of cabinets.

Custom cabinets are one of my personal favorite types of cabinets but are often ignored by new and veteran homeowners alike. From what I’ve seen, it almost seems as though the cabinet community doesn’t quite appreciate custom cabinets as much as they should.

A common but unspoken opinion seems to be that custom cabinets are for wealthy people- folks who have a lot of money and want to show off their taste and status. If it weren’t for these judgments, more people might feel inclined to give custom cabinets a chance.

III. Our Custom Cabinets Product Lines

The 4 types of kitchen cabinets:
There are four main types of kitchen cabinets available on the market: melamine, lacquer, PVC, and wood veneer. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and can suit different styles and budgets.

Melamine kitchen cabinets are made of particleboard or MDF covered with a thin layer of resin-infused paper. The paper can be printed with any color or pattern, and gives the cabinets a smooth and uniform finish. Melamine cabinets are durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. They are also economical and widely available. However, melamine cabinets can also be prone to chipping, peeling, and fading over time. They are also heavier than other types of cabinets, and may require more support and hardware. On average, new melamine kitchen cabinets cost between $4,000 and $9,000. Used models can be found for as low as $2,000 but might need some refurbishing to make them look new.

Lacquer Modern Light Gray Kitchen Cabinets With Island

Lacquer kitchen cabinets are made of wood or engineered wood coated with several layers of lacquer paint. Lacquer paint is a solvent-based product that creates a high-gloss shine and a hard surface. Lacquer cabinets are stylish, sleek, and modern. They come in a wide range of colors and styles, and can be customized to your preference. They are also long-lasting and keep their color well. However, lacquer cabinets can also be expensive, difficult to install, and sensitive to scratches and chips. They may also require regular polishing and maintenance to keep their shine. On average, new lacquer kitchen cabinets cost between $15,000 and $40,0002. Used models can be found for as low as $8,000 but might need some repainting or refinishing to restore their gloss.

PVC Kitchen Cabinets

PVC kitchen cabinets are made of plastic composite sheets that are molded into different shapes and sizes. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic material that is waterproof, fire-resistant, and termite-proof. PVC cabinets are lightweight, easy to install, and low-maintenance. They are also available in a variety of colors and finishes, and can be customized to fit any space and style. However, PVC cabinets can also be less durable and strong than other types of cabinets, and may warp or crack under extreme temperatures or humidity. They may also fade or discolor over time, and are not very eco-friendly. On average, new PVC kitchen cabinets cost between $10,000 and $30,000. Used models can be found for as low as $5,000 but might need some cleaning or repairing to make them functional.

Modern Wood Veneer U-shaped Kitchen Cabinets (2)

Wood veneer kitchen cabinets are made of plywood or particleboard covered with a thin layer of real wood. The wood layer can be any species, such as maple, oak, cherry, or walnut, and can be stained or painted in any color. Wood veneer cabinets are a great way to get the look and feel of natural wood without the high cost. They are also more stable and resistant to warping and cracking than solid wood cabinets. However, wood veneer cabinets can also be susceptible to scratches, dents, and water damage. They may also require more care and maintenance to keep their appearance. On average, new wood veneer kitchen cabinets cost between $10,000 and $20,0003. Used models can be found for as low as $6,000 but might need some sanding or refinishing to make them look fresh.
