shapes of the panels and corners, the arches of the doors and the “feel” of a fluted or reeded island face are
sharply contrasted by the substantial, straight lines of the butcher block island top extension.
Round shapes have long been associated with harmony, balance, and a sense of completeness. In psychology, they are often seen as more inviting and approachable compared to angular shapes. Curved details in cabinetry can have a positive impact on the overall atmosphere of a room by providing a sense of comfort and relaxation.

The salmon pink built-in to the left would have been attractive without the top panel. However, the scalloped or fluted, curved panel gives this unit a much more sophisticated and feminine feel.
The kids’ wardrobe on the right is a sweet design element for a toddler’s room. Rather than straight stiles in the center, the designer decided to have a “reeded” edge, thereby instantly elevating the doors to a more luxurious, soft-looking item.
Historical Significance of Curved Details

Cabinetry has been synonymous with rigid geometry for a long time and understandably
so: it’s easy to work with and it’s more economic. Curved details require more labour and
thus are more costly.

Note the curved details in this shelving unit. Placed between ourward curving vertical panels, the corner backs of the individual shelves meet the corner back of the these side panels (a details added to the adjacent full-length cabinetry). In the front, however, they veer away substantially from them.
In addition, the shelf corners and the vertical support panels have curved details. The top and the gables of the base cabinet also show curvatures. To finish this dramatic and appealing look, the cabinet is wall mounted leaving the floor undermeath visible. Concealed lighting elements complete the look.
