Seamless and Stunning Kitchen Renovations

In this kitchen note how the contemporary design with a European flair mixes a number of materials to produce a cohesive look.
The white cabinetry is the canvas for the marble look of the backsplash and countertop.
The walnut of some of the cabinetry doors and the built in ventilation hood, together with the fitted round dining table warm up this design.
The stratrgically placed glass doors in the kitchen island lend an airiness to the space. Cabinet underlighting provides additional illumination.

Secres of an Impeccable Kitchen Renovation
1. The Design Process
After setting up your appointment with one of our staff at your local showroom, you are immediately met with a knowledgeable representative of PA Kitchen’s amazing team. Armed with your plan(s) and budget you sit down to discuss the parameters and requirements of the project.
Your representative reviews your vision and project requirements. And, based on this information and your budget, you will discuss whether you need:
~custom or semi-custom cabinets, or
~ pre-assembled or ready-to-assemble (RTA) ones.
Once this has been determined you will be guided through the many options in materials, finishes and hardware.
2. Available Materials
There are 4 options in cabinet materials to choose from for your kitchen renovation. These are as follows:
(a) Particle Board – With all the benefits of a laminate product, particle board is also moisture-resistant and lightweight. Its smooth surface can be finished with a wood veneer, laminate or paint. In addition, PA Kitchen’s particle board is made from a high- density fiberboard, making it even stronger, denser and more moisture-resistant!
(b) Plywood – PA Kitchen’s plywood is made of 11 layers of wood! Plywood can be used as a substrate as well as a finish. It too has a low formaldehyde release and is strong and stable.
(c) MDF – MDF is a popular choice for kitchen cabinetry due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness. MDF, made from small wood fibers and bonded with resin, is strong, durable and moisture-resistant. It is easy to maintain and cost-effective. Paint or laminate finishes are used to personalize your design. PA Kitchen’s MDF has a very low formaldehyde release. There is no pungent smell.
(d) Solid Wood – PA Kitchen offers a range of wood species for your cabinets. They are: walnut, ash, cherry, maple, pine and oak. Solid wood cabinetry usually receive a stain or clear varnish finish. Your representative will inform you of all the pros and cons of each species. The look of wood is highly personal: some people love walnut but not oak; others prefer maple over cherry.
3. Cabinet Finishes
As you are aware, not only is the selection of the material important, but so is the finish. While the material itself determines the longevity of the product, the finish is the look we see. In addition, the application of finishes is determined by the material. For instance, you wouldn’t want to apply a paint finish to a laminate cabinet. Why bother, right? MDF is
very suitable for a paint finish, particle board is not. A beautiful wood wants to be seen and not covered…
PA Kitchen has a vast selection of finishes, dependent on the material you choose and the design you want. Let’s take a look at the most common ones.
(a) Laminates – Durable and affordable, laminate cabinets are made of a substrate of wood or MDF with a laminate overlay. Laminate cabinets can be produced in a wide variety of colors and designs. They are easy to maintain and eco-friendly. Below are a some laminate samples in a wood look finish, a linen look and a paint finish.
(b) PVC / Thermofoil – This type of finish is a “plastic” one. Doors and other kitchen cabinet components are typically wrapped in this finish. Thermofoil cabinets can take high humidity and changes in temperature easily. They are resistant to scratching and ultraviolet light. They do not warp, are durable and very affordable.
(c) Wood Veneer – Offering the look and feel of solid wood, veneers are less costly and come in a variety of styles, colors and finishes. The look of wood without the higher pricetag!
(d) Melamine – As a popular finish melamine is a plasticized (resin) coating applied to a substrate of, for instance, particleboard, with many colors and patterns to choose from. The material is strong, scratch resistance. It withstands moisture, fire and heat. Depending on its thickness it can also be used directly to build cabinets.
(e) Paint / Stain Finish – Paint finishes, available in all the colors of the rainbow and then some, are typically applied to plywood, particle board, or MDF. Your showroom designer will work with you to decide which substrate will be best for your kitchen renovation. A stain finish is applied to solid wood materials. Stains can contain colors to give the
wood a different look, let’s say from a White Oak to a more deeper brown or even black tone. Some woods looks best in a clear topcoat to preserve the original wood color and to add protection; other woods really want a stain with color.
(f) Lacquer Finish
Cabinetry with a lacquer finish are in a category of their own all together…!
A rich lacquer finish adds a lot a depth to any color due to its many layers of paint and top coat. It is highly suitable for contemporary kitchens. The typically reflective finish provides a modern look. It is durable and easy to maintain. Most of all, it is an elegant and sophisticated look. At PA Kitchen lacquer cabinetry is available in three types. These are:
~ High Gloss Lacquer finish which can be adjusted from a semi-gloss to a really high gloss. This does not allow grease and dust or dirt to stick to the surface.
~ Matte Lacquer with a flat, non-reflective finish. This look is soft and understated, while at the same time showing a depth of color. A matte lacquer finish is more suited to a transitional or even traditional look.
~ Metallic Lacquer for a contemporary, almost industrial look. Metallic lacquer is a look that appeals to a very discerning customer. It is not very everyone…
At PA Kitchen lacquered cabinetry is made from high quality material that is long-lasting. It is strong and can withstand high temperatures, humidity and moisture. Scratching, staining and fading are non-existent. We use imported water-based lacquer paints with low volatile compounds (VOCs) which makes the finished product odorless and non-flammable. It is safe and eco-friendly for your client’s family and a good selling point!
If you choose a lacquered finish you are in good hands with PA Kitchen! We follow a very precise process to provide the best lacquer finish.
PA Kitchen applies 6 coats on all its lacquered cabinets. Three base paint coats, two top coats and lastly a gloss coat that are applied to a substrate of either HDF (high density fibreboard), MDF (medium density fibreboard) or Plywood. These base materials are dense, there are no gaps or holes and readily receive a paint finish. The paint is sprayed on and cured in ovens at high temperature to harden it. This process will make it durable and heat/scratch resistant.
